Effective 1 May 2002 and with a transitional period of one year, China has introduced a product approval system, termed “Chinese Compulsory Certification” (CCC). The system is coupled to compulsory marking.

China has issued a regulation (the Administrative Regulation for Energy Efficiency Label, 5 pages in Chinese) for mandatory labelling of products which consume energy. This regulation came into force on 1 March 2005.
China has issued administrative rules under which, from 1 March 2007 onwards, certain substances are subject to compulsory labelling. These rules are similar to those contained in the EU RoHS directive.
On 4 March 2009 China promugated the rule for “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” on the basis of the European directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE) and entered into force since 1 January 2011.
